NYCxDESIGN 2024: A Celebration of Finnish Design Excellence with Durat and Finarte

Redefining Nordic Rugs with Bold Designs and Timeless Tradition

The annual NYCxDESIGN festival, renowned for its vibrant celebration of design innovation and creativity, this year featured a captivating showcase by Finnish design powerhouses Durat and Finarte. Held at the residence of the Consul General of Finland, this event unveiled their latest collections, reflecting a harmonious blend of tradition, sustainability, and cutting-edge design.

For nearly four decades, Finarte has stood as a paragon of Finnish design, transforming rugs into essential interior masterpieces. Founded in 1985 by Eija Rasinmäki, a pioneer in Finnish textile design, Finarte has evolved under the stewardship of her daughter, Larissa Immonen, who has infused the brand with contemporary flair while adhering to its foundational principles: handmade craftsmanship, sustainable materials, and responsible production.

Finarte's latest collections, showcased during NYCxDESIGN, are a testament to the brand's commitment to bold, joyful designs. Among the highlights were the Baden and Suovilla rugs, both designed by lead designer Marianne Huotari.

The Baden rug draws inspiration from the colorful tiles of Japanese onsen spas, embodying a harmonious blend of wood, tatami, and ceramics. Its vibrant patterns and soothing rhythms promise to bring a touch of spa-like tranquility into any home.

In contrast, the Suovilla rug captures the serene beauty of Finland’s wilderness. Made from soft, long-pile wool, it mimics the delicate texture of cotton grass that blankets Lapland's bogs. Available in earthy tones, the Suovilla rug creates a warm, inviting ambiance that connects the interior space with the natural world.

Another standout piece, the Akaatti rug, is a collaboration with the award-winning designer duo Juslin Maunula. Inspired by the works of Josef Albers and Carlo Scarpa, Akaatti features a luxurious tufted texture that adds depth and sophistication to its geometric design. This rug not only serves as a functional item but also as a statement piece that elevates contemporary interiors.

Finarte's commitment to sustainability is evident in their meticulous selection of materials and responsible production processes. Handcrafted in India, their rugs are made from recycled and natural fibers, ensuring minimal environmental impact while supporting local artisans. This long-standing partnership has fostered a cultural exchange that enriches both Finnish and Indian craftsmanship traditions.

Larissa Immonen, CEO of Finarte, emphasizes the importance of creativity and sustainability in their design philosophy. "Our rugs are more than just interior items; they are centerpieces that bring joy and character to any space. We are proud to share the essence of Finarte with New York, showcasing our stylish, colorful designs that reflect quality craftsmanship and innovative textures."

Hanna Anonen and the "Facades" Collection

Durat, another Finnish design powerhouse, has been at the forefront of the circular economy movement since its inception in 1990. Known for repurposing waste plastic into high-quality design materials, Durat’s products combine functionality with an eco-friendly ethos.

This year at NYCxDESIGN, Durat collaborated with designer Hanna Anonen to introduce the "Facades" collection. Anonen, celebrated for her playful use of colors and innovative concepts, brought a fresh perspective to Durat’s sustainable materials.

The collection includes versatile organizers made from Durat's signature composite material. These pieces are designed to elegantly display flowers, organize desktop essentials, and even serve as chic kitchen accessories. The granulated finish of the material not only enhances its modern appeal but also signifies a commitment to environmental responsibility, with each piece crafted from recycled plastic. Hanna Anonen's innovative approach challenges traditional design norms, infusing everyday objects with a sense of joy and creativity. Anonen's work, featured at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair as part of NYCxDESIGN, showcases her ability to merge aesthetic beauty with practical functionality.

Durat's collaboration with Anonen proves their dedication to innovative design solutions that are both beautiful and environmentally conscious. By transforming recycled materials into elegant and functional objects, Durat exemplifies the potential of sustainable design in shaping a better future.
