Laurel DeWitt: The Dancing Queen of NYFW

Laurel DeWitt’s Spring/Summer ’18 collection “Dancing Queen” takes us back to the golden age of disco where radiant metallic couture walked the line between fashion and performance.

Draped Chain Halter and Fishnet Shorts

DeWitt, whose clientele includes Lenny Kravitz, Amber Rose, will.i.am and Lady Gaga, left no detail behind in debuting her latest collection at NYFW. It was a journey through time as The Church of the Holy Apostles was transformed into a heavenly Studio 54, complete with sliver chain-link balloons floating vertically from the altar. With a driving disco beat, the show opened with Legendary Damon as ‘the doorman’ clad in a golden suit of chainmail and metal fringe and wielding a “You’re Not On The List” clipboard. His entrance set the tone for the 16 looks to follow.

Inspired by the metallics, lamés and mirror balls that ruled the disco scene, Dewitt focused on slinky bodysuits and draped chain racer back maxi dresses along with shimmering separates that combined high-shine alloy halters with tonal metal mini skirts, chain bell-bottoms and chain fishnet hot pants. Each look, branded with Dewitt’s goddess logo, shimmered and swayed down the runway, exaggerating every movement of the body. Headpieces were also a key feature and included disco ball inspired crowns, metal turbans and chain head wraps. The traditional finale closed with a show-stopping Rayuana Aleyce, wearing a silver chain fishnet jumpsuit, paillette and chain fringe vest and a tiered mirror ball crown. Once again, Dewitt’s innovative metal couture and flawless execution brought us back to a celebration of Disco chic that did not disappoint!
